Protest Over Traveller Accommodation To Take Place

The Government is being warned there are still hundreds of Traveller families living in similar conditions to the victims of the Carrickmines fire.

Ten people lost their lives in the blaze that ripped through a South Dublin halting site just over two weeks ago.

Travellers rights' groups say the victims were living in sub-standard accommodation and a protest is planned for outside the Dáil today to draw attention to their plight.

Lobby group Minceirs Whiden says the issue is too contentious for local authorities to deal with and wants an independent body to take over responsibility for accommodation.
