Talks are underway to try and end a sit-in at a hostel in the Liberties.

Around 15 residents and their supporters are refusing to leave the peaceful protest at Johns Lane West.

The building has been used as emergency accommodation for a number of years but was closing today so that 31 houses for homeless people could be built on the site.

Focus Ireland, who help run the facility, says that most of the people who stayed in the hostel have been offered an alternative.

But Kathleen Delaney, says she’s been given one night somewhere else:

"They didn't say nothing to me about it, anything to me, just that they only got me a one night bed for the night and that's not good enough, in the Bru."

Ballymun native Kenneth Ford has also stayed there on and off for the last few months:

"I'd be happy with a six month bed, but to build secure accommodation that's a joke because if they're moving all of us they should be giving us secure accommodation at the same time every night. There's 42 of us now without a bed for the night".

Things are more complicated for Rosemary Fearsaor Hughes – she’s visually impaired and has an assistance dog.

She said the alternative she was offered wasn’t suitable for her needs:

"It's up 44 stairs, 3rd floor, awkward staircase, not even a straight staircase. People intoxicated on the stairs, people distracting the dog. It's certainly not appropriate and certainly not safe."

Reps from Focus Ireland are in talks with the residents and protestors to see if they can come up with a solution.
