Victims of domestic violence may soon be able to secure emergency barring orders, if proposed new laws are passed.

At the moment, delays in getting these court orders are putting victims in danger.Prop

Calls to Women's Aid spiked after Emma Murphy's video accusing her ex boyfriend of hitting her went viral earlier this month.

Last year, over 13,500 applications were made to the courts for a safety or barring order.

That's a two percent increase on the previous year.

Some victims are waiting up to fourteen weeks to have their cases heard; a delay which jeopardises their safety.

However, victims could soon be able to avail of emergency orders as part of proposed new legislation.

The bill also stops alleged abusers from contacting their victim by any electronic means, including social media.
