Nine permanent taxi ranks and 22 night time ranks in the city centre are being proposed.

Dublin City Councillors have approved draft by-laws for 31 new ranks in town.

The proposed permanent ranks would be at Baggot St. Lower, Barrow St. Burgh Quay, Cavendish Row, Eccles St. Hanover Quay, Marlborough Place and Silloge Road.

Night time ranks are proosed for Baggot St. Lr, Bridge St. Lr, Capel St. Sth Great George's St. Lesson St Lr, Mount St Lr, Ormond Quay Lr, Parliament St. Phiblsborough Road, Sackville Place, St. John's Road West, St. Stephen's Green Sth, Thomas St. and Wellington Quay.

The bylaws also propose extending 4 existing ranks and reducing one.

Only one rank currently outside the Shelbourne would be eliminated.

The idea is to ease pressure on existing ranks and to make it easier for passengers to get a taxi.

However the bylaws do not take into account changes to ranks needed when construction of the cross city luas begins later this year.

The plans will go out to public tender from Monday.
