An investigation is underway after a Mountjoy prisoner got his hands on illegal drugs while being treated in hospital.
The inmate allegedly assaulted prison officers after the package was taken off him.
The prisoner was being treated at the Mater hospital’s Emergency Department when a visitor allegedly handed him a parcel full of drugs
It’s understood the man became extremely aggressive after it was confiscated and lashed out while being transported back to Mountjoy.
It’s the second time a prison escort has been subjected to violence in recent months.
In February, notorious bank robber Derek Brockwell made a run for it after stabbing two officers at Tallaght hospital.
It also raises further questions about the drugs culture within Mountjoy prison.
Only last week, a new report found that considerable amounts of drugs and other contraband were being smuggled in.
Entry routes have been identified according to the Governor and a stricter screening process is also being considered for visitors.
