Gardai investigating a suspected murder in Tallaght are appealing for anyone who may have seen a row breaking out in the area yesterday.

44-year-old Karl Holmes died in hospital after being beaten during a street fight outside some houses at Avonbeg Gardens.

At around 5.25 yesterday evening, emergency services responded to reports of a dispute involving a number of men at Avonbeg Gardens in Tallaght.

Karl Holmes was found lying unconscious on the street when they arrived.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was taken to Tallaght hospital but he lost his fight for life an hour later.

The former international boxer, who lived just a short walk from where he was killed, had a criminal record and a history of violence.

In 1994, he was jailed for head-butting a man who died three days after the attack, but  the motive for his killing isn’t clear.

Gardai have already been knocking on doors in the area, and Superintendent Duff is urging anyone with information to come forward:

A technical examination is ongoing at the scene and a post mortem will take place later.

That’ll establish an exact cause of death and help Gardai decide what shape their investigation will take.
