A verdict is expected today in the trial of a Dublin teenager accused of murdering 16 year old Melanie McNamara, nearly two years ago.

Daniel McDonnell of Brookview Lawns, Tallaght denies the killing on February 7th 2012.

The jury’s heard Melanie was shot in the head by the occupants of a black jeep that pulled up alongside the parked car she was sitting in with her boyfriend and another man at Brookview Way in Tallaght.

The prosecution says the 16 year old may not have been the intended target of the fatal attack.

It’s their claim that 2 letters written by Daniel McDonnell in which he allegedly boasts about the killing amount to an admission of guilt.

One of the letters to a former girlfriend says ‘That other thing wouldn’t have happened if I’d known she was in the car’.

However the defence has argued that there is no forensic evidence such as DNA or fingerprints linking the 19 year old to the crime scene.

The matter is now in the hands of the jury – with a verdict expected later today.
