Plan To Deal With Lead Poisoning

Around 200 thousand houses in Dublin and across the country which were built prior to 1970 could be eligible for a pipe replacement grant.

This comes following a discovery of extreme levels of lead in some homes.

Thousands of households are thought to have lead piping carrying their water supply, putting the residents in danger.

The metal can cause lead poisoning and health problems, particularly in children and pregnant women.

Water contamination from lead is particularly bad in Raheny where one house has 80 times the maximum safe limit. 

It's now expected a grant scheme will be rolled out to help low-income households meet the cost of replacing the pipes.

Those on low incomes and living in private homes could be eligible for the funding under the new strategy, but it will be another couple of weeks before full details are released.

Irish Water spokesman Jerry Grant says they will replace the connection with the public supply if it is made of lead but replacing domestic pipes is not up to them:

Meanwhile taking water from the west to feed Dublin's growing demand is also back on the agenda.
