The cost of on street parking takes a hike from today.

The price increase was approved by Dublin city councillors last February and it's the first price increase since 2008.

From today, charges jump by more than 10%, from €2.90 to €3.20, in an expanded yellow "very high demand" parking zone.

While those parking in an expanded red "high demand" zone will be paying €2.70 up from €2.40.

In the "medium demand" green zone, motorists who were paying €1.60 an hour to park on some suburban streets will now be paying €2.70 for the same time, an increase of 68.75%.

Consumer experts have warned that the price hike will drive consumers out of the city centre, and that there is no real justification for the increase.

AA director of consumer affairs Conor Faughnan said Dublin City Council makes about €30m per year from on-street parking.

He says the increase puts traders at a competitive disadvantage to suburban shopping centres in places like in Dundrum or Blanchardstown.
