Consultants have warned that overcrowding at Beaumont hospital is nothing short of institutional abuse.

Senior doctors have raised concerns about conditions in the packed emergency department.

According to a letter sent to the HSE, patients are anxious for their own safety and are concerned that their chairs will be taken if they get up and go to the toilet.

The doctors warned that the delivery of care is not up to standard, and patients experience physical discomfort and a loss of dignity while waiting for treatment on a chair or trolley.

People also suffer from sleep deprivation, have difficulties maintaining personal hygiene, suffer from a lack of confidentiality and are exposed to scenes that are distressing and disturbing.

The letter was issued in December when the trolley crisis was at a peak however just yesterday 49 patients were waiting on trolleys at Beaumont.
