Bosses at Beaumont Hospital are apologising for having put non-urgent operations on hold.
The decision was taken yesterday as management tries to deal with overcrowding. Doctors are also doing extra medical rounds in order to try and relieve the pressure on its Emergency Department as well as finding extra ward beds. Yesterday there were 40 people on trolleys waiting to be treated. Today that number has fallen slightly to 37.
The hospital which specialises in brain surgery is one of the country's busiest medical centres. People are being urged not to visit the ED unless absolutely necessary. Instead their being asked to visit their local GP, out-of-hours GP service, or for minor injuries, to attend the Mater's Rapid Injury Clinic in Smithfield.
In a statement, management say all non urgent procedures for both the 11th and 12th of February have been postponed and any patients affected have already been contacted.
