Nurses and midwives are to "work to rule" at hospitals across the country from March 7th.

It's after the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation rejected proposals to deal with the recruitment and retention crisis in the health service.

It will mean members will no longer do over time, cross cover or redeploy to cover absent colleagues who have not been replaced.

General Secretary of the INMO Liam Doran, says the proposals that were put forward this week were "too little too late".

He added: "Nurses will continue to provide the full range of nursing or midwifery care to their patients on their own ward or their own area, but we're not going to pretend that nurses can do two and three people jobs every day on a shift."

SIPTU has also confirmed that its members will be supporting INMO colleagues.

Meanwhile the Dail will today hear statements on the state of the nation's health service after it emerged earlier this week that tens of thousands of patients aren't included on official waiting lists.
