The number of people sleeping rough in Dublin has halved since this time last year.

The Dublin Region Homeless Executive has decribed the drop as 'welcome'.

On the last night of November, teams of people counted every person they found sleeping on Dublin Streets. They found 91 people out rough, compared to 168 last winter.

The Dublin Region Homeless Executive says extra beds made avaiable for homeless people has helped the situation.

Cathal Morgan Director of the DRHE said the group is "working towards eliminating the small percentage of dormitory style accommodation. The HSE and Tusla and other statutory and state-funded services are working with us to ensure that we can provide health and welfare supports on site in each service."

More than 30 people sleeping rough say they don't want to stay in emergency accommodation.

Sam McGuinness from Dublin Simon Community said “This is a phenomenal figure considering an additional 471 emergency beds have been provided for rough sleepers in the past 12 months."

"If we look back to this time last year, 168 people were identified on the Winter official count, when the Night Café wasn’t in existence", he said.

The figures are released as Dublin Simon begins its House of Light event.

A Christmas themed projection will be displayed on Powerscourt Town House for the next three nights.
