The government's reported to be planning measures to curb rent increases for the next four years.
The new legislation would ensure that private-sector rents can only rise in line with the consumer price index.
A report in today's Sunday Times suggests the measure could be added to the Residential Tenancies Bill which is currently before the Seanad.
Rents were up between 7 and 9 per cent in the twelve months to June.
Housing charities say the rises are contributing to the growing homelessness crisis.
