New specialist cells are due to be built at Dublin airport.

A High Court judge previously described the existing facilities as “unfit" for holding prisoners.

Last month, the Government announced a €27 billion plan to build things like roads, schools and the long-awaited Metro link to the airport.

The projects will be rolled out over the next six years.

And today, the Minister for Justice announced details of how money will be spent on Garda facilities.

There will be no new stations built in Dublin before 2021, but major refurbishment works will be carried out at the Bridewell and the new Divisional Headquarters at Kevin Street is expected to be finished by 2017.

Dublin Airport’s custody facilities will be upgraded under the new plan.

They were singled out for criticism when a High Court judge decided to free a suspected illegal immigrant because of what he described as “substandard” holding cells that weren’t fit for purpose.
