The construction of a new National Maternity Hospital in Dublin has been delayed.

It was due to be completed in 2018 but is being put back a year.

According to the Irish Independent, department of health briefing documents reveal the promised new maternity hospital for 2018, will not be completed until 2019.

The current facility at Holles Street is due to be transferred to the campus of St Vincent's hospital to collocate it with an acute adult facility.

Staff at Holles Street have been frustrated at overcrowding at the building.

Once up and running, the project will take around 30 months to complete and the fitting out and the transfer of services will take another year and a half.
