Dubliners can get a cut in their income tax if they embrace city living.

The Living City Initiative is an urban regeneration project which it’s hoped will bring life back into the heart of the city.

To qualify, buildings need to be built before 1915 and located in certain parts of Dublin like Dorset Street, Pearse Street and around Guinness’.

People will either buy or already own the house, refurbish and live in it and get an income tax deduction based on the what they spent doing it up.

Finance Minister Michael Noonan explains how it would work.

"If you have a small house, or acquire a small house, within the city area. Supposing it cost you $100,000 and you decided to refurbish it and it cost you another €100,000. Over 10 years, you can get €10,000 a year against your income tax, if you are paying that much tax".

The scheme’s been welcomed by the Lord Mayor, Christy Burke’s been campaigning for something like this in Dublin for a number of years.

"I certainly would love to see a living city, I'd love to see lights on in Capel Street at night, I'd love to see lights on in parts of Dorset Street at night and parts of Parnell Street. I think it would be a great goal and a great achievement. Without a shadow of a doubt, it will bring vibrancy back into the city."

Application forms for the scheme can be found on the Dublin City council website.

There's also a number of maps where people can find out if they qualify for the scheme.
