The Justice Minister says she's conscious of the effects of anti-social behavior for people living in, working in and visiting Dublin.

It's after a group of businesses along some of the city's most popular tourist trails came together to complain about the level of crime in their areas.

They reported seeing regular fights and muggings as well as open drug dealing in the middle of the day.

As part of a City Centre Policing Plan, Gardai say they've increased drug searches in the Pearse Street area by 24% so far this year.

Frances Fitzgerald says drug dependency is a long-standing problem for Dublin, which needs a co-ordinated approach.

The Minister says she'll be meeting with a newly-formed group which includes City Council staff, Gardai, the HSE and business owners to discuss how to strengthen the on-going efforts to enhance public safety.
