Netflix is reminding its users that it will never ask them for any personal information in an email. It follows a report by security technology company McAfee, which suggests scammers target sites like Netflix to steal credit card information for sale on the Dark Web.

The report, entitled The Hidden Data Economy, pointed out that hackers sell access to a number of online services on the Dark Web, offering things like stolen credit card information, Netflix logins and loyalty scheme points.

Netflix says "phishing is an attempt to acquire your personal information by pretending to represent a website or company you trust online."

"Phishers will go to great lengths to try to hijack your account or steal your personal information. They may create fake websites that look like Netflix, or send official-looking (but fake) emails asking you for personal information."

Netflix says it will never ask users for any personal information in an email, including any credit or debit card numbers, bank account numbers, social security numbers or your account password.

The streaming company is warning customers to "be careful if you receive an email message asking your for this or any other personal information."

"If you're unsure about a link in an email, you can always hover over the link to see where it goes."

And if that doesn't do the trick, Nextflix says "you can always type www.netflix.com directly into your web browser."
