A senior Muslim cleric says he was attacked in Dublin and the victim of a deliberate hate crime.

Posting on X, Shaykh Dr Umar Al-Qadri said he believed last night's alleged assault was a planned attack after arranging to meet two people in Tallaght.

He wrote: "The next thing I remember is feeling disoriented in my car, surrounded by helpful Irish neighbours of the area I was visiting, as the Gardai and ambulance arrived."

The Chairperson of the Irish Muslim Council says he was taken to hospital and underwent a CT scan.

"Thankfully, there is no brain injury or broken jaw, but the left side of my face is severely swollen and my front teeth are damaged."

He has thanked those who helped him and says he's never had something like this happen in the 21 years he's lived in Ireland.
