A woman on trial for the murder of her work colleague says she knew she had to fight for her life when her car crashed into a river.
29 year old Marta Herda from Pairc na Saile in Arklow denies murdering Csaba Orsas by intentionally driving them both into the water.
The jury has already been told that Csaba Orsas was in love with his work colleague Marta Herda and Marta told gardai he would ring and text her constantly.
In March 2013, they were a car together when it plunged into the river at Arklow Harbour. Csaba’s body washed up on a beach two miles away and Martha survived and today the jury has been hearing what she told gardai about the crash.
Marta said they were fighting in the car and Csaba was screaming and she wanted him to stop. She said the car hit the barrier and she got a shock. She described being in the water and trying to swim to the stones.
Martha said she knew there was no point in screaming as there was nobody there and she needed to save her strength.
She said the water was getting into her eyes so she closed them – she said she was tired and she knew she couldn’t swim anymore.
She told the gardai the water was taking her down and she couldn’t feel anything. The next thing she remembered she was walking and was screaming for help and calling for the gardai.
