A man who knocked down and killed a 77 year old woman in Finglas has been ordered to carry out community service instead of being sent to jail.

Rose Douglas was crossing the North Road when she was hit by a car that broke a red light in January 2013.

According to a Victim Impact Statement read out in court today, Rose Douglas’ husband of 60 years hasn’t had a happy day since she died.

On the morning of Jan 9th 2013, she left their home to collect charity boxes from a local garage.

She told her husband she wouldn’t be long.

At around 11.20, she was knocked down by a silver Peugeot car while crossing the North Road and died from her injuries in hospital.

Carl Feighery, an electrician with an address at Millbourne Crescent in Ashbourne was on his way to the dentist that day.

He said it was hard to see with the sun in his eyes.

He told Gardai he remembered the lights turning before a pedestrian stepped off the kerb and into the path of his car.

Today, the 32-year-old was sentenced to 240 hours community service.

Given there was no evidence of drink-driving, speeding or prolonged dangerous driving, Judge Martin Nolan decided it would be unfair to jail him.
