A woman has told a jury that her daughter was “hysterical and shaking life a leaf” when she came home after allegedly being raped in Dublin city.

Her daughter, who’s in her 20s and has Down's syndrome, claims a man brought her back to his place after she became separated from her mother while out running.

The man is accused of raping the woman in his Dublin city flat in June 2013. He’s also accused of sexual assault and having sex with a mentally impaired person.

During her cross-examination via video link this afternoon, the woman held a pink teddy close to her and answered questions about the moments leading up to the alleged rape. She said she remembered some kissing before they went upstairs to his bedroom and said her shoes and cardigan were the only items she took off herself.

From the stand, her mother described becoming separated from her while out for a jog. When her daughter eventually returned home, she said she was “extremely distressed” and was banging on the door screaming for help.
She said she started retching while telling her about a man who put his “tongue in her mouth”. She later showed Gardai where she thought she met him.

The man, who can’t be named for legal reasons, denies all the charges.
