Up to 250 prefab homes could be built on 20 vacant sites in Dublin city and county to accommodate homeless families currently living in hotels. 

The houses can be assembled on site in a matter of days and could be available to families within the next 3 to 6 months.  

More than 550 families are living in emergency accommodation in Dublin of whom about 360 are living in hotels.  

Examples of the houses are being installed at a test site on East Wall Road behind North Strand fire station and will be shown to city and county councillors in two weeks time.  

Six housing types, most of which are two bedroom homes will be available to view.  

Meanwhile the government is being urged to give housing associations access to State-owned land banks.

It's in a bid to boost the supply of social housing for about 100 thousand people on waiting lists.

In a pre-budget submission today, the Irish Council for Social Housing outlines a range of measures aimed at resolving the current housing shortage.

Director of Policy, Karen Murphy, says opening up access to cheaper, State-owned land banks would help the long-term delivery of homes..
