Plans to build a cycle path between Blackrock and Sandymount are to be split in two because of a row over the Merrion Gates.

35 households still don't know if they're going to be forced to give up their gardens to make way for a flyover to clear the bottleneck.

The National Transport Authority first proposed shutting the Merrion Gates and building a cycle route back in 2016.

Locals had opposed the construction of a two way flyover and plans have stalled because transport chiefs can't come up with a viable alternative.

The original proposals include compulsory purchase orders affecting 35 homes.

Labour Senator Kevin Humphreys has told 98FM News it's unacceptable that those householders face such uncertainty:

"It leaves so many residents in the immediate area in limbo. But the flyover itself is fundamentally wrong. It's poor planning. It's going to increase traffic on Strand Road and eventually back up the East Link"

The cycle path project is now going to be split in two so that at least the southern stretch can begin to be built.

But the NTA's being slammed for failing to come up with a decision, which is leaving many residents in limbo about the future of their homes.
