International students no longer have to register immediately with the Garda National Immigration Bureau.

The Department of Justice has published a range of measures to try to tackle massive queues on Burgh Quay.

Up to 700 people lined up yesterday to get visas, with some camping out overnight.

The measures include extra staff, longer opening hours during the week and opening weekends.

A year ago the department said it planned to introduce an online appointment booking system.

Final testing is now taking place.
