Can you tell the difference between your Big Macs and your Mighty Macs?

McDonald's is afraid you can't.

The fast-food giant is trying to stop Supermac's from using its name, and has asked the EU Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market to force it to re-brand.

In a 41 page document, McDonald's argues that there may be confusion between the Supermac’s name and their own name.

Supermac's has been operating under its name in Ireland for 37 years, and has also started to open restaurants in other countries, including Australia.

Managing Director of Supermac’s Pat McDonagh "As two very distinctive brands with immediately identifiable menus and a clear difference in ingredients and taste there has never been any confusion for our customers.

"The Supermac’s name was a most obvious choice for our first restaurant when it was given to me as a nickname during a gaelic football match I played with my secondary school", he added.

The appeal by McDonald's could also cause problems for the Supermac's brand in Australia - if the EU agrees that potential customers may unwittingly walk in the wrong door.
