Massive Rise In First Time Calls To Rape Helpline

The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre is calling for the government to restore its funding, amid a huge rise in demand for its service.

The centre's annual report for 2014, which has been published this morning, shows an increase of 30 percent in first time callers to its helpline.

Over 12 thousand people contacted the centre's national 24 hour helpline last year.

69 percent of these callers were from the Dublin area.

Two hundred and 15 victims of rape and sexual assault were accompanied by the centre's trained volunteers to the sex assault unit in the Rotunda Hospital.

Speaking at the launch of the report, Minister Frances Fitzgerald said that she hopes that the funding increases:

"We were able, because of the improving economic situation, to maintain the funding last year and this year. And I want to see increasing investment in these front-line services, they are very important for our community."
