The Government has announced the wording for the marriage equality referendum.

In May, you'll be asked if you agree that "marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex".

The Catholic group, We Are Church, says it strongly supports giving same-sex couples full equality - pointing to the fact that the referendum won't change adoption or surrogacy laws.

Same-sex couples can already adopt, and the Government says it's going to improve that in law before May's referendum to clear up any confusion.

The Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, says today is an historical day for Ireland and noted that "this is the first time a people's constitutional recommendation has been fully accepted by a Government".

Ministers signed off on the document at a special cabinet meeting this morning. However the exact date for the holding of the referendum in May has still to be decided.
