Marathon Competitor Hands Back Medal After Reports They Used The Luas

An off-duty garda who was competing in the recent Dublin Marathon has handed back their medal, after reports they used the Luas during the race.

Organisers carried out an investigation, and say as per the rules and regulations of the marathon, this person will have their result removed from the records and will be disqualified from future Dublin Marathon or Dublin Race Series events.

They say the person has apologised and returned their finishing medal and T-shirt.

A garda spokesperson says they are currently conducting an internal fact finding review of the matter.

A spokesperson for the Dublin Marathon says: "I can confirm that an investigation has taken place into this matter. The individual has apologised and returned their finishing medal and T-shirt. 

"As per the rules and regulations of the Dublin Marathon, this person will have their result removed from the records and will be disqualified from future Dublin Marathon or Dublin Race Series events."

A garda spokesperson says: "An Garda Síochána is aware of a matter at the recent Dublin City Marathon involving an off-duty Garda.

"An Garda Síochána is currently conducting an internal fact finding review of the matter."
