The 2022 Irish Life Dublin Marathon will see the largest ever field on record.

The racing event, which gets underway at the weekend, is returning after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

Organisers say there'll be 25,000 entrants for the 26.2 mile course on Sunday the 30th.

It's known internationally as the 'friendly marathon' because of the level of support from the general public along the course.

The crowd will be ramped up with a brand new 'Purple Mile' being introduced - to cheer on competitors in the final moments of the race.

This year's marathon will finish at Merrion Square as has been the tradition for the last while.

Many will be running for charities close to their heart or competing in the elite field of competition.

Among the high achievers are seven runners who are competing in their 41st marathon.

They include Dubliners Michael Carolan, Dominic Gallagher, Martin Kelly and Peadar Nugent.

Mary Nolan Hickey from Wicklow, Seamus Dunne from Meath and Billy Harper from Wexford round off the list.

The elite field of international and Irish marathon runners could also win over €100,000 in prize money.
