The man serving a life sentence for the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin will try and have his conviction declared a miscarriage of justice today.
Brian Meehan from Crumlin claims “new or newly discovered facts" came to light during the 2001 trial of notorious criminal John Gilligan.
On June 26th 1996, a motorbike pulled up beside Veronica Guerin as she sat in her red Opel at traffic lights on the Naas Road.
The pillion passenger opened fire and journalist was hit by all six bullets fired into her car.
Brian Meehan was jailed for life following a 31-day trial in the Special Criminal Court three years later.
The non-jury court found he drove the motorbike.
Convicted drug dealer John Gilligan was later acquitted of her murder, but Meehan claims details about witnesses to the killing emerged during his trial, and he believes these may have been crucial to his defence.
He’s now seeking an order quashing his conviction and life sentence as a miscarriage of justice on what he believes are new or newly discovered facts.
