A court has head that Dublin GAA star Jonny Cooper was "asleep and defenceless" when he was allegedly attacked with a knife on Dorset Street.

Mark Lavelle, with addresses at Basin Street, Dublin 8 and in Swinford, Co. Mayo is charged with assault causing harm to the footballer.

24-year-old Jonny Cooper was stabbed repeatedly in the neck and face at around 5am on Sept 20th.

He had been out socialising with friends the night before.

The court heard the Dublin defender was "asleep and defenceless " on Dorset Street when he was subjected to an "unprovoked and frenzied attack".

Last week, Mark Lavelle was charged with assault causing harm and he applied for bail this afternoon.

Gardai objected due to the seriousness of the charge and the strength of the evidence against the 31-year-old.

The court was told it will be alleged that Mr. Lavelle was arrested a few hours after the stabbing and he was caught with a knife linking him to the attack.

Despite a promise to comply with any bail conditions, Judge John Lyndsay refused his application and remanded him in custody for another two weeks.
