A known criminal remains in hospital following a botched hit in Cabra.

Daithi Douglas was shot in the back at close range at around half seven last night.

The 54 year old was rushed to the Mater hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

The convicted criminal had been walking his dog on Killala Road when he was wounded several times,

Investigations Editor with the Sunday World Nicola Tallant says this bears all the hallmarks of a gangland hit

"This is a classic case. There would always be two: there'd be a shooter and there'd be a driver of a car. Usually, they will step outside of the car when they see their target, there's no doubt that this car will be found somewhere burnt out, completely torched".

Daithi Douglas has several convictions and was jailed in 2011 after being caught with over half a million euro worth of cocaine.

A former cell mate has been speaking to 98FM's Dublin Talks.

Gary says he had a drink and drug problem, but the Cabra man helped him get clean

"Daithi would bring me to his room, his cell, he'd tell me what triggers were for me. He was like a counsellor to me. I know he did bad, the only reason I'm on this phone is that there is a human element to this man".

The Garda Technical Team has been examining the scene where bullet casings were left behind.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
