A 25-year old man is to be charged in connection with the murder of a mother of three in Cork city this week.

Sixty year old Marian Horgan was pronounced dead at her home at Murmont Avenue in Montenotte on Monday morning after she had been stabbed.

Gardai arrested a man outside Marian Horgan's house after they were alerted to an incident by a neighbour.

The 25-year old who was known to the family, was taken to Mayfield Garda Station for questioning and the DPP directed last night that he be charged in connection with her murder.

He will be brought before Cork District Court this morning.

Ms Horgan was attacked in the kitchen of her home while her husband Billy was upstairs.

He came downstairs when he heard a disturbance and was also attacked but he managed to flee the house.

A neighbour spotted him being chased by the assailant and he helped restrain him until gardai arrived.

He was treated for his injuries in hospital and is recovering with relatives in the city.
