A man has appeared in court charged with an attempted sexual assault on a young woman on the southside.

James Donohoe of Harold's Cross Road was arrested shortly after the woman was attacked on a residential street in Rathmines.

The victim, who's in her early 20s, was walking along Effra road in Rathmines just after midnight yesterday.

She was grabbed from behind, punched and dragged to the ground.

Gardai say she put up a fight and her screams alerted some passersby who rushed to her side as her attacker fled the scene.

A description was distributed to local Garda units and resulted in a man being arrested a short time later.

This morning, James Donohoe was brought before Dublin District Court where he was charged with assault causing harm and an attempted sexual assault

Judge Michael Walsh advised Mr. Donohue this was a "serious matter" and he was assigned a solicitor.

The court heard he made no reply to the assault charge but said "I'm not going to plea to that" when the second charge of attempted sexual assault was put to him.

There was no application for bail today and the 49-year-old was remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court next week.
