Luas operators are warning drivers that going on strike won't help them get the pay increases they want.

SIPTU workers are due to walk off the job this Thursday and Friday, however normal services are due to resume on Saturday.

Workers are looking for a pay increase but Transdev has said it cannot afford to pay increases of up to 54%.

Eoin Reidy from trade union SIPTU has said that: 'apart from normal earnings in the last five years the only addition pay increase anyone has received in Transdev is a 2.5% increase in 2011 and  this is at a time  when passenger numbers have been going up by 30% and revenues by 30%.  So we're saying that the staff that generate the services have to be part of the success.

Commuters will have to make alternative arrangements as industrial action gets underway.

Gerry Madden of Transdev says it will leave the company seriously out of pocket.

'In terms of revenue numbers towards us as company in the region of 100,000 euro loss per day, which actually is a very critical number because whatever deal we get to eventually, and we will have to our financial situation is not going to be improved or helped in terms of a pay award by these strike.'
