Up to a quarter of beds in the newly reopened Mount Carmel Community hospital in Churchtown, lay empty last week.

It's because northside patients won't cross the Liffey to occupy them.

The beds are for patients due to get out of hospital on the north side where theres a shortage of step down facilities.

A stay in Mount Carmel is seen as short term before home support or nursing home care is organised for patients.

Yesterday just 35 of 65 beds were being used.
