There's an appeal for volunteers who saved Kilmainham Gaol from ruin back in the 60s to come forward.

The government wants to honour those who helped restore the prison, as part of the Easter Rising centenary celebrations next year.

In 1960, the jail was in an advanced state of decay. Hundreds of volunteer labourers and tradesmen came together to form the 'Kilmainham Jail Restoration Society', and freely gave their time and skills so it could be preserved for future generations.

The Office of Public Works plans to compile a list of those names and put them on display in the museum at the prison.

Fine Gael TD for Kilmainham, Catherine Byrne, is asking family members of those who've since died to get in touch too.

They should email kilmainhamgaolworkers@opw.ie or write to:

Kilmainham Gaol Museum

Inchicore Road, Kilmainham,
