A High Court Judge is warning about the dangers of internet drinking contests, saying they will result in a 'tsunami of homicide and rape prosecutions' in court.

Mr Justice Paul Carney was speaking as a 38-year-old Waterford married father of two was jailed for 8 years, after pleading guilty to raping an acquaintance, after drinking six to seven pints of beer in February 2011.

He said it was the latest case in a long line in which young men - with no previous convictions - take a quantity of drink they are not used to, and end up facing responsibility for a homicide or a rape.

The Children's Minster and the Children's Ombudsman have both called for social media users not to take part in so-called Neknominatons.

The warning follows the deaths of two young Irish people, which have been linked to the drinking dare.

98FM's Dublin Reporter, Maria Shannon, has been looking into the latest internet craze.
