The children of Jason Corbett are believed to be on their way home from North Carolina to Ireland.
Limerick man Mr Corbett died in a domestic incident in the state earlier this month - and police aren't looking for anyone outside the home in connection with his death.
His wife and the stepmother of his two children, Molly Martens, had sought custody of Jack and Sarah - but her case was thrown out on Thursday.
Her lawyer says she'll be lodging an appeal, but that hasn't stopped the children from being brought to Ireland.
