James Reilly Calls For Abortion Referendum

The Coalition to Repeal the Eighth is welcoming the calls from Minister James Reilly to hold an abortion referendum.

The Children's Minister says a referendum on the eighth amendment should be held early in the term of the next government.

The article - which was brought in following a referendum in 1983 - gives equal right to life to a mother and her unborn child.

Minister Reilly's comments appear in the Sunday Independent, where he's quoted as saying that women carrying babies with fatal foetal abnormalities should not be forced to go through with their pregnancies.

Sinead Kennedy from the Repeal the Eighth Coalition, says she hopes other politicians come forward to support a referendum:

However, Minister Reilly said there can not be a scenario of abortion on demand.
