A Dun Laoghaire based Senator says using the local harbour as a naval base 'makes perfect sense.'

The local Council says it's been in 'initial discussions' with the Department of Defense over possibly operating from the Dublin facility.

However officials at Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council are reportedly keen to avoid disrupting others at the harbour.

"Perfect Sense"

Senator Barry Ward says the South Dublin location is perfect to patrol our border with Britain:

"To my mind it makes perfect sense."

"I welcome the fact the Defence Forces is now being expanded to encompass much more activity."

"Also, I think the change in the Government's approach to the Defence Forces is very very welcome and necessary."

"If you look at the Irish Sea, obviously it has to be patrolled."

"It's not just an Irish border it's a European border too."

"Dun Laoghaire is perfectly positioned to help with those patrols."
