Ireland Now Legally Recognises Transgender People

It's been confirmed that Ireland's new system for recognising transgender people has taken effect today.

The Department of Social Protection says from today it will accept applications from people who want to have a new gender recognised.

It follows the passing of the Gender Recognition Act - described as one of the most progressive legal systems in Europe.

Dr Lydia Foy, who fought a lengthy court case to have her new gender recognised, says it's a historic day:
