A cabinet minister has played down suggestions that Ireland may take 1,800 refugees.

Earlier, Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald offered the figure as the amount that Ireland could take in.

But Health Minister Leo Varadkar says it's impossible to say exactly how many people could be resettled here.

"This is a situation that's evolving, I don't anyone can say today how many refugees are coming into Europe. It could be 200,000, it could be 400,000 who knows and alot of that depends on the geo-political situation in the Horn of Africa, in Syria, in other places. Any response we make has to be dynamic and we have to be willing to do more if this crisis continues. And it could go on for years".

It comes as Dubliners were given an insight into the conflict in Syria.

Aid agency GOAL set up a display on South King Street at lunchtime which they hope will help people understand the crisis in Europe.

Chief Executive Barry Andrews says Syrians are fleeing a war torn country..

"They are classic refugees, they have a well grounded fear of persecution where they are and they would have come here an awful lot sooner but they wanted to stay in Syria. They don't want to come here and we have to remind ourselves of that all the time".

Meanwhile, hundreds of refugees have broken out of two separate holding camps in Hungary.

Many are desperate to get to Germany and are said to be unhappy at conditions.
