Increasing illegal parking fines will not be enough to deter people from parking illegally, according to the Dublin Commuter Coalition.

The fine for parking a vehicle on a footpath, cycle lane or bus lane will double to €80 from next month.

Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan said the increased penalty was aimed at encouraging road users to be more considerate.

Feljin Jose, Public Relations Officer for Dublin Commuter Coalition says while it's a good step it won't solve the issue:

"It's a necessary step. It's a good first step but we do still need the increased enforcement.

"Even if we have the increased enforcement we'd still have the increase in fines because €40, some people can just afford to keep paying that. There's no penalty points or anything.

"€80 is a little bit higher but we still need the increased enforcement.

"What we would like to see is no money raised from parking fines at all because everybody is parking legally and not making it dangerous for other people."
