The homeless crisis could drive some families out of Dublin to rural communities.

Clare based charity Rural Resettlement Ireland says it has been contacted by a number of homeless Dublin families in recent weeks.

One hundred and 50 homeless families with more than 300 children are currently living in Dublin hotels.

Rural communities are also requesting families to settle in their areas, to revitalise the locality and to keep schools open.

It comes as Focus Ireland says its seen a 25 per cent jump in the number of calls for its help in the past 12 months.

8 thousand people contacted the charity in 2012, that rose to 10 thousand last year, and the organisation expects that will soar even higher by the end of 2014.

It's blaming the government policy on rent supplements for the rising number of families losing their homes or facing the threat of becoming homeless.

The government says its looking at a number of measures to ease rental pressures.
