Government To Stop 'Ridiculous And Immoral' Rent Jumps

The Environment Minister is promising to put a stop to 'ridiculous and immoral' jumps in rent in Dublin.

The latest figures show rents are now almost as expensive as they were during the height of the boom - about 3% lower than they were in 2007.

The average monthly cost is now more than €1300, and a study has shown that it is cheaper to buy a home than rent one - if you can secure a mortgage.

New lending rules introduced earlier this year means a buyer must have at least 20% of the cost of the home they want to buy saved before they can apply for a mortgage.

Many believe that's making it almost impossible for people to get on the property ladder, as they can't save enough while continuing to pay high rents.

Alan Kelly now wants the new rules to be 'tweaked', but in the meantime has confirmed that he is working with the Finance Minister to try and make rents more affordable.

The package will be announced in the next few weeks, and it's expected to see rent prices linked to inflation for the next few years.

Alan Kelly said "I personally favour rent certainty, and linking rent to Consumer Price Index for a number of years", but he said that would only be temporary and would be lifted when there are more homes for people to rent.

"I think there are some unscrupulous landlords who are behaving in an immoral way and that is unacceptable", he added.
