The Government aren’t doing enough to tackle the lack of housing here in the city.

Focus Ireland’s Director of Advocacy made the comments at the launch of a new report which criticises the Government’s record on basic human rights.

They say while plans are in place, they’re not going to have an impact on the homeless crisis that’s in the city right now.

Mike Allen says the coalition just isn’t doing enough.

"What the government put in place quite substantial sums of money for social housing - which is all very welcome - but those are only really going to kick in in two and half, three years time".

"And what we have at the moment is a crisis on the streets and in people's homes - and we need much more urgent action to deal with the immediate problems in front of people".

It comes as the St. Vincent De Paul say they’ve had a surge in calls from people who’re going without food to pay increased rents.

Linda Kenny’s the Team Leader for the Eastern region helpline, she says people are really struggling.

“The fact is the Rent Allowance has now been cut, that landlords have upped their rents in Dublin and this has caused hardship on people trying to make weekly and monthly rent.”

Linda was speaking as the St. Vincent De Paul launched their annual appeal saying they’ll help 30 thousand people between now and Christmas.
