Former assistant Dublin city and county manager George Redmond has died. His career spanned 40 years but he's most remembered for his involvement in several planning scandals.

He entered Dublin Corporation in the early 1940s where he worked until he retired in 1985.

In the 90's he found himself under investigation by the Planning Tribunal and the Criminal Assets Bureau over claims he had received a number of cheques in questionable circumstances from developers. Mr. Redmond maintained he'd been paid legitimately for giving advice.

In 1999, he was famously arrested at Dublin Airport with IRL £300,000 in cash and cheques.

In 2004, the planning tribunal found Mr. Redmond had accepted a corrupt payment, and had tried to get in the way of panel and its work. For the next 10 years he faced a legal battle to have that overturned, and in 2014 the findings were withdrawn.

Separately he was tried in the courts on a criminal charge of corruption. After being convicted, he was sentenced to to one year in jail. However, that was overturned by the Court of Appeal after 6 months.

The 92 year old passed away yesterday at Blanchardstown Hospital after a short illness.
